Because humankind living in darkness has no relationship with God, they are overtaken with worry and fear about what fate awaits them at every turn. The lost soul is filled with despair. When nonbelievers share their struggles with those of us who are the faithful in Jesus Christ, we should thoughtfully share God’s word and address their concerns with truth in love.
The World’s Outlook
Nonbelievers see the world simply as a collection of uncertainties or bad things waiting to happen. Many worry about the world’s future, the threat of disaster, rumors of war, possible shortages, injustice, and the diabolical actions of leaders and authorities. Fear grips them as they consider the wickedness that regularly makes the headlines. They cannot see the light amid all the darkness, and because of their lack of faith, they believe it is only a matter of time before something bad happens to them.
The unbeliever seeks security in whatever makes him feel safe, unaware that true need is spiritual and only God can satisfy it. Many turn to comforting—but unreliable—answers. These can seem satisfying for a time yet lead to disappointment and harm.
Nevertheless
God has given us His unfailing Word. We are reminded, “The LORD preserveth all them that love him…” (Psalm 145:20). Our only response to the lost soul’s worries is to share with him the living Word, as it alone offers true hope and assurance. Jesus teaches us not to worry about tomorrow (Matthew 6:34). Whatever we face, “The LORD is nigh unto all them that call upon him…in truth” (Psalm 145:18). God knows what will happen, and He is there to help us through any and all difficulties. Paul reminds us, “Be careful for nothing; but in every thing by prayer…let your requests be made known unto God” (Philippians 4:6). Connecting with Scripture replaces our worries with power to overcome, as Jesus did.
